Why Ben & Jerry's? Why oh why?

I don't know what the promotion was for because I tore the letter up right away. It was some junk mail mentioning 180 free minutes, 12 pints of Ben & Jerry's, and something else. This could lead to nothing but bad. Why? Well, for my last birthday, I received as one of my birthday gifts, a tub of Ben & Jerry's ice cream (Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz to be exact). Yes, that's right. A tub of Ben & Jerry's ice cream like they scoop out of in the Ben & Jerry's shops. I finished the entire tub of ice cream in less than 30 days. LESS THAN A MONTH PEOPLE!

I can only hope that I'm as lucky this year /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

blojsom gets a BloggerDispatcher

I think I'm definitely going to have to add this dispatcher to our contributed section. I never really thought that outside of the JSP and Velocity dispatchers offered in blojsom that I'd ever see another dispatcher written. Besides, I hadn't seen any other blog software out there that allowed you this kind of flexibility. I figured, we support JSP and Velocity and that'll cover most all the bases. Damn, was I wrong! /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

There was Chris Nokleberg who wrote himself a FreeMarker dispatcher. So, that brings blojsom up to 3 presentation technologies that it can support.

Today, someone submitted a first cut at a BloggerDispatcher. This person shall remain nameless for the time being because Mark and I are conspiring (well, just providing some guidance) on another extension to blojsom that's seriously going to kick major ass. But anyway, back to the BloggerDispatcher. In short, it understands the Blogger tags and does the translation to insert the proper information from blojsom.

Wow ... just wow! I mean, it's simple ... it works ... it allows those poor souls who don't want to upgrade to Blogger PRO to finally get titles in their posts /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif Now, granted the Blogger template language is not a formal presentation technology, but it's its own beast. I'm just excited because now blojsom users have potentially 513 "skins" available from BlogSkins.com. So yeah, the support for the Blogger syntax will evolve, but the major pieces are there. It's just a good feeling to see this kind of contribution.

Re: Velocity? Jython? What do they think?

Contrary to this post, The Velocity authors are nice in that they offer two versions of the Velocity JAR files.

From the Velocity README.txt file:
1) velocity-1.3.1.jar : The Velocity jar that does not include any external dependencies needed by Velocity, such as the jakarta-commons-collection classes, Jakarta Avalon Logkit, or Jakarta ORO.

2) velocity-dep-1.3.1.jar : This is a Velocity jar that includes all dependencies that were included with previous distribution jars.

Another blojsim user goes live!

So, in addition to having another layout (we'll have to nab it for a blojsom "theme"), Jay's iCite blog has got some action going via blojsim. Sweet! Blogging via instant messenger rocks.

IntelliJ Aurora build #815 is available

You can check out all the fancy pants features in this post.

There are a few things that irk me about this build from the forum post. 1) "IMPORTANT. Project file format has been changed and automatic convertion is not available yet. You will have to reconfigure your project's paths manually. Sorry for inconvenience." I'm sure we'd all be OK to wait a LITTLE longer to have this done automatically.

But the kicker was 2) "IMPORTANT. EJB support is broken and may not function properly. We will fix it in a couple of builds. Sorry for inconvenience." Was it really necessary then to put the build out there if you KNOW that this functionality is broken. I don't use EJBs at the moment, but I'd be pissed if I depended on and/or heavily used IntelliJ's EJB support. Again, I'm sure we'd all be OK to wait a LITTLE longer to have this done automatically.

Slapping the "wicked monkey bitch" or blojsom's referer log plugin grows up

There are moments in blog history that will live on forever. Andy's choice in phrasing "wicked monkey bitch" was just, well, way too fscking funny. In any event, Mark has checked in the changes to blojsom's referer log plugin that enables you to define regular expressions for referer entries that you want to exclude from your referer log.

It will be interesting to see who comes across my blog via way of Oz.

Blog entry meta-data in blojsom

In blojsom 1.8, we introduced the idea of per-entry meta-data. What does this mean? Well, put simply it means that an arbitrary set of keyed objects can be attached to each blog entry. And yes, I said objects. So, for example, a word count plugin could attach the # of words to each blog entry. Or, if we didn't have comment support in our blog entries, a comment plugin could store BlogComment objects in this meta-data. Cool, eh? /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

Well, in blojsom 1.9, the default implementation will be able to load blog entry meta-data from a Java properties-style file. It means that we can finally attach things like author information to entries. And, as you'll notice at the bottom of this entry you'll see a nifty little, "Posted by:" to demonstrate this capability. Mark has updated the XML-RPC handlers for Blogger and MetaWeblog to write out author information into the blog entry meta-data. Hell yeah beotch! Now we've got some real multi-author action working.

The JIRA t-shirt competition? What ever happened?

So, back in the dizay, there was this JIRA 2.0 t-shirt competition. Basically it was to come up with the slogan for a t-shirt for JIRA 2.0 development. There were quite a few entries submitted.

What ever happened Mike? Inquiring minds want to know!

For reference, I think my best was, "JIRA 2.0: Well, it ain't Bugzilla." /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Suit seeks ban on Oreo cookies

Wow! The rash of useless lawsuits never stops! Who wants to ban Oreo cookies in California? Really, I'm at a loss for how utterly stupid this lawsuit really is! /images/emoticons/mozilla_frown.gif

Customer service still applies to open source projects

I truly value the opinion of folks out there who are downloading and evaluating blojsom. Matt had troubles with blojsim. I responded letting him know Mark would be updating blojsim. I check his blog today to find this post and some kind words.

"It always brings a smile to my face when I get a quick response in regards to an open source project. As soon as I get a chance, I'll try installing and playing with Blojsim 0.9. Thanks to David, Mark, and all the other open source people like them in the universe."

Social Software Alliance

This morning, googling for something other than "social software" but nonetheless related, I came across the Social Software Alliance homepage. I still have more reading to do on the site to see what's up. It's good to see a mix of technologies represented, not just blog technologies.

[ANNOUNCE] blojsim 0.9

Happy Mother's Day first off.

Mark has released blojsim 0.9. Now you can blog via instant messenger to blojsom via Jabber, AIM, and MSN. Well, you could before with blojsim, but Mark has updated blojsim to be compliant with the latest version of blojsom (blojsom 1.8) and has revamped the installation instructions to make setup of blojsim as easy as blojsom.

Besides, you know you want to sport the "entries by blojsim" logo on your site!

"blojsim: blogging via instant messgener never seemed so easy!"

You can't hide from Google or Why blojsom is like a drug habit!

OK folks, like Henry Rollins' spoken word rants, there is a rhyme and reason for this blog entry. I write blojsom. I use Google. I google for blojsom every now and then to see if other people are writing about blojsom. No surprise. I do get excited when I come across a new blog using blojsom via my googling.

This morning I came across Nick Chalko's Show me the code 2.0-dev blog. He's experimenting with blojsom. Sweet! But just like a drug habit, sometimes you don't want people to know you're using blojsom. Too bad Google is watching us all ... always watching /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

But anyhoo ... in closing, "Don't use drugs, drugs are bad ... mmmmmkay."

Re: Semantic Blogging

The cat started to come out of the bag awhile back but apparently got scared. Well, now that the cat is really out of the bag ( Dave Winer) and is making its way around the house (Sam Ruby), maybe blojsom will get a few more downloads /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

But seriously, I'm just thrilled that blogging is taking off in so many directions. It's exciting to see the innovation happen in the blink of an eye.
