BoardPusher

BoardPusher allows you to create custom skateboard decks ala what Cafepress allows you to do for t-shirts, mugs, thongs, etc. (via Metafilter).

iSkate

Dave Winer's also noticed how pervasive the iPod is becoming. And that's around the streets of cities ... where you'd probably expect to see the familiar white ear buds. But, it doesn't stop there. This year, I've seen more more and more kids at the skatepark wearing iPods. Last night there were at least 3 kids with iPods banging around the park. I'm sure it's age that's telling me, "You spent how much on that 40GB iPod and you're going to do what on that 8 ft. ramp?"

Honestly, I think it's a comfort and flexibility factor. As much as I'd like the motivation that music could provide, I don't think I'd want something knocking around my pant pocket. I know I'd be annoyed by the wires at the very least. When I was running 5K and 10K races regularly, I never wore a watch because I felt like, at times, it was constraining. The iPod shuffle might be the device where I think differently about this whole business.

But ... for the time being ... I'm content to roll around to the sound of wheels on wood.

Halfpipe Thrills in South Glens Falls, NY

So, today I checked out Halfpipe Thrills in South Glens Falls, NY. OK, there are some good ramps, but what in the hell is with the top layer of the ramps? I don't know what material it is. It's not quite plastic and not quite wood, but quite slick. I can say that much for the surface. I stayed away from the 5 ft. spine and other such madness because of it. Not that I didn't skate 'em, but man that stuff is tough to get used to. That and the decks for the ramps were, to me, a bit of a pain. I guess I'm partial to a deck which is more flush with the coping. I find you lock up less. So, bitching aside, it was a good couple of hours. And hell, they had a little ramp so I was ripping some wall rides. The search for Animal Chin continues ...

Shelter Skatepark Mini-Ramp Contest

Well, in less than 4 hours, I'm throwing myself back into the fray. It's been awhile (more than 10 years) since I've entered skateboard contests. All of the contests except for one were ramp contests. So, today @ 5 PM EST, the Shelter Skatepark is throwing a mini-ramp contest. Best of 2 runs. 15 yr old and under on the 2ft. mini. 15 yr old and over on the 4 ft. mini. Honestly I'd have liked to have skated on both ramps in the contest. The two ramps are different and pose a different set of challenges.

It's going to be a blast and already I can feel the adrenaline. So, think back to your Powell Peralta days, bust out your copy of The Search for Animal Chin, or just play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 and think of me /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif I'll update the entry with results and thoughts on the contest.

Update: No $25 winner take all prize for me. But, I skated well. There were only 5 people and it wasn't looking like the contest would even happen since there weren't enough people signed up for the 15 and over 4 ft. contest. All in all, good times.
