Camaraderie and Community
« "I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time" | Main | del.icio.us links for 2005-05-19 »
5 years ago I purchased my motorcyle. The first few times I was out on the road, I didn't understand "the wave" extended to me by passing motorcyles.
There's a part of me that wants to find a way to extend "the wave" each and every day, regardless of whether I'm riding my motorcycle or not. Common courtesies, tolerance, and understanding are free, just like the "the wave".The motorcycle wave is something nearly all bikers do even if they don't think about it. It is a simple to-the-side flick of the wrist imperceptible to most motorists but understood by bikers. It's like a secret handshake.
That about sums it up.In time of need, the person you waved to may be the only one who stops to help you. In its simplest form, I guess it boils down to camaraderie of the saddle, and personal pride to say to the other rider: "Hey, this is a great sport and I am having fun... how about you?"
