Search Engine Redux #11

Another month, another set of wacky search strings leading people to my blog.

  • believe in the mojo - No, believe in yourself.
  • dylan malone author - I can't say I've ever come across this author.
  • i'll drink to that livejournal icons - I'll drink to "I'll drink to that" LiveJournal icons.
  • software engineer bryan knight - You're probably looking for this Bryan Knight.
  • bad food - As a rule of thumb, don't eat bad food, eat good food.
  • pie tattoo - Not quite as popular as the hamburger and french fries tattoo.
  • cristal liquor ingredients - A little love. A little tenderness. A little carbonation. All that adds up to a little slice of heaven.

Be sure to check back next month wherein more search string madness will surely be uncovered.

Ripping

Right now I'm ripping the following CDs:

I bought these CDs at Target instead of from iTunes. I used these purchases to decide whether or not DRM figures into my purchasing equation. But I'm seriously here people, the fscking sticky tape cover on the top of CDs is insane. Yet to be purchased are the following CDs:

And that last CD ... Tease ... hands down one of the sexiest CDs you'll hear this year!

BlogTimes Plugin is a Blojsom plugin to generate a graph image summary of the blog post times. The graph's color and size are configurable.

You get a pretty graph similar to the following figure. Nice!

As a side note, we're approaching the 100 plugins milestone if you combine the general plugins with the plugins for web administration. Double nice!

MySQL under OS X

Database Server. Adminstrator. Connectors.

Database Server: Installation was painless. I believe OS X already comes with MySQL installed. Or maybe it's just OS X Server? Either way, MySQL was installed/upgraded to the release I downloded.

Administrator: Great application for managing users, databases, and all the MySQL configuration parameters. I'm impressed and I can't imagine MySQL administration without this GUI. It also allows you to schedule backups of your database(s) through the GUI.

Connectors: Download for your favorite programming language.

I'm happy. The applications just worked. I like that about OS X.

Syndication Feed Import plugin

In a post to our mailing list this morning, a user asked about migrating to blojsom from another blog software package. So, one of the new plugins for blojsom 2.26 is the syndication feed import plugin. It uses the ROME library. Reading syndication feeds really was as easy as this tutorial on reading a syndication feed. I've tried importing my RSS 2.0, RDF 1.0, and Atom 0.3 feeds without a hitch. I'd only suggest using the feed validator to validate your feed before importing your entries.

Good work on the ROME library. Works as advertised.

blojsom and XStream: Reloaded

Awhile back I looked at the possibility of using XStream in blojsom. It was focused on the back-end wherein blog entries and responses (comments/trackbacks/pingbacks) would be serialized and de-serialized as XML using XStream.

If you were running against the current version of blojsom in CVS and wanted to try it out yourself, you could download the blojsom/XStream files. To install, just 1) unpack that .ZIP in the addon\core\src\org\blojsom directory; 2) compile the add-ons; 3) copy the xstream-1.0.2.jar file into your /WEB-INF/lib directory and 4) change the following line in /WEB-INF/blojsom.properties, blojsom-fetcher=org.blojsom.fetcher.xstream.XStreamFetcher. That's it.

As I said in the other entry, "Although not a deviation from using the filesystem as the content database, it's another format for the entries themselves ... and it worked." Also, all of the plugins work. No changes required. It's another confidence booster of sorts should I start (or maybe complete) work on an implementation of a fetcher for blojsom that goes against something like ... oh, I don't know ... a database.

3 Vodka

I get a message from Mark last night that he's sippin' on 3 Vodka.

This is the result of a remarkable journey. A search for perfection, character and natural balance. A quest that lead to 3. Unmistakably smooth, 3 has a character like no vodka ever made. 3 is distilled its own way, using a proprietary and time-intensive method. It marks the first time in history that soy has ever been distilled. Distilled from a delicate combination of specially selected components of the soy plant, soy isolates; the purest elements of the plant. It is the natural essence of soy that lends 3 its signature smoothness. All things in life seek balance. 3 is what happens when vodka finds it.

It's yet another vodka to add to the growing selection at home. Presently there about 12 different vodkas at home. I try not to let the available selection dip below 8 or 9. If nothing else, I've got another codename for the next version of blojsom after this next release.

Amazstalking

Dan on Amazstalking:

So Aimee has an Amazon wishlist. I don't know why, but tonight I realized that I absolutely, utterly needed to be able to syndicate her Wishlist as an RSS feed... God help me.

Mostly I think this was because I thought it was an amusing idea, wondered if it existed, found such a service from 2003, and then discovered it was broken. God damnit, this should be easy, so why doesn't it work?!

It's like cyberstalking someone else's Amazon.com wishlist ... only, you get an RSS feed out of it /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Enjoy!

TinyMCE integration

I spent all of a minute integrating the TinyMCE WYSIWYG html editor with the administration templates for adding/editing blog entries. Just experimenting with making the editing experience easier and more friendly.

To install/try:

1. Download TinyMCE. Unzip and copy the jscripts/ folder into your blojsom installation directory.
2. Download the editor templates. Extract the .ZIP file in your blog's templates/ directory. Example: /WEB-INF/default/templates.

That's it. After installing, you should see something similar to what's in this image.

You don't even need to restart blojsom. Unfortunately it doesn't work in Safari ... yet. As a side note, this also illustrates your ability to override any of the blojsom adminstration templates on a per-blog basis /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Updated enclosure, theme, and upload support

A few notes on these areas for the next release of blojsom.

RSS enclosure support: You can now provide explicit values for an RSS enclosure that you're attaching to an entry. This would be useful if your enclosure is not hosted on the same machine as your blog. If you only provide a URL to the enclosure, blojsom will figure out the appropriate values for the length and content type.

http://www.blojsom.com/resources/david/rss-enclosure-explicit.jpg

Uploading themes: You can now upload a .ZIP file containing a theme for blojsom. After uploading the theme, it will be available to all of the blogs on your system to use. As a side note, this plugin was developed taking advantage of the dynamic interface capabilities in the administration console. Once you install the plugin, it makes the file upload form available from the administration page where you switch themes.

theme upload

File upload support: If you upload a file through the administration console, you now get a link you can copy and use when adding an entry that references the upload.

IP to Country plugin

IpToCountry Plugin is a Blojsom plugin that adds country information to each blog entry's comment, based on the IP address metadata of the comment. This plugin uses the CSV data from IP-to-Country.

I added this to the list of the other plugins available for blojsom.

Flashloaded

Over at Flashloaded, you can get some interesting tidbits for your Flash development such as components, fonts, or templates. They also run a Flashloaded Showcase which highlights various Flash-designed websites each month. You can also vote for your favorite showcase site each month.

This month, one of the showcase websites was designed by a friend, Timothy Schapker. It's a 1950s, retro-style viewmaster highlighting his work.

There are a few things I liked over the other sites. The 1950s style is carried throughout the site ... from the background to the font. Also, running under Firefox with the Popups Must Die extension enabled, the site continues to work. It's refreshing to know that some designers don't feel like they automatically have to resort to displaying their Flash in a separate window.

My one gripe is that I'd also like the ability to turn the sound effects off in addition to the music.

So, you be the judge and vote accordingly to your own tastes. But, you have to admit that Flash done well is pretty impressive.

WWLJD? Leeroy Jenkins plugin

What would Leeroy Jenkins do? Or rather, what would Leeroy Jenkins say? Let's do this!

Leeroy Jenkins plugin for blojsom. It contains the source, build.xml, and compiled JAR file. To install, copy the JAR to your /WEB-INF/lib directory and add the following line to /WEB-INF/plugin.properties: leeroy-jenkins=org.blojsom.plugin.text.LeeroyJenkinsPlugin. Add "leeroy-jenkins" to the end of one of your flavor-based plugin chains in /WEB-INF/(blog-id)/plugin.properties. Make sure the meta plugin runs before this plugin.

In your blog entry, on a separate line, use "meta-use-lj-quote=". You can leave it blank after the '=' to have the plugin insert a quote at random. Or you can use a specific number from 0 to 19 to use a specific quote. In your template, you can pull out the quote like, <p>And now, for your moment of zen: <i>$!entry.getMetaData().get("lj-quote")</i></p>.

Still lost? Watch this video. Play with the soundboard to hear the soundclips of the quotes. And finally, check out the musical tribute.

Why the plugin? Because I could /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Watch Out

I bought two more Fossil watches over vacation. That brings my grand Fossil watch total up to 28. Aside: Actually, I own over 30 watches, but really I only wear the Fossils.

So, basically that covers the month of February in which I could wear a different watch each day of the month. By my birthday this year I'll certainly have, or rather I'm birthday wishing to have 3 more Fossil watches. That'll bring me to 31 watches and then I could wear a different watch each day of the month, no matter what month.

The madness ends when I own 365 Fossil watches. I want to be able to wear a different watch every day of the year.

337 watches to go!
