Search Engine Redux #10

Another month, another set of wacky search strings leading people to my blog.

  • mojo tattoo - Unfortunately, mojo can't be ink'd.
  • tarts - They're, 'ya know, a little sour.
  • blue images - You've come to the wrong place. Go here.
  • contacting trent reznor through interscope - Or you could hack Paris Hilton's sidekick again. Heiresses love goth!
  • cashmere skatepark - Wow ... I mean ... Wow! That'd probably be the most expensive skatepark ... EVER! Like, the kind of skatepark where you'd WANT to fall /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif
  • alcohol cabinet - The liquor cabinet here only stocks the finest liquors. And yes, there's Cristal. Though, that bottle is long since empty.
  • mallrats livejournal icons - Gratuitous LiveJournal icons search string. Honestly, I don't think it'll ever end.

See y'all next month!

Ink

For whatever reason, over the past few months, I've been feeling that I need more ink permanently needled into my skin. Of course, like many others, I started out thinking, "I'll just get one tattoo and that'll be it. I won't need to get any more tattoos."

Wrong!
Wrong!

And so, it's been a year and a half since I last had any work done. I've designed my tattoos myself and I'd been looking for something to help me design some tribal tattoos.

Enter, Create-A-Tattoo.com.

It's basically a web-based tribal tattoo creation application. There are roughly 600+ designs at the moment to choose from and tweak. Or you can design your own using some simple line and shaping tools. You can save your designs in your own library. It was only $16.95 for a year, so I figured what the hell.

After playing with the application, I've got two designs of reasonable size and intricacy that I'm happy with. My frustrations came about because there was no way to cut and paste between their designs or your own designs. I wrote to them asking if they were adding this functionality at some point.

Enter, Create-A-Tattoo.com's Plus offering. Copy and paste. Element libraries. Half-sleeve, armband and lowerback tattoos. Zoom in and out. And it's only a $8.95 upgraded added onto the $16.95 for the basic application access.

Upgrade!

So, for around $26 a year, I get to create and print as many designs as I can and then pay to have them permanently etched. Damned if this isn't going to be an "interesting" few years I've got ahead of me.

Grappa

I'm now getting into Grappa.

Grappa, also known as Grappa Wine, is an Italian grape-based spirit of between 40% and 50% vol. It is made from the distillation of pomace (also called marc), i.e., the pieces of grapes (including the stems and seeds) that were pressed for the winemaking process. It was originally made to prevent wastage by using the leftovers at the end of the wine season.

If there's a specific Grappa you think I should try, let me know. My parents are headed to Greece in June and I've heard Greek Grappa is quite good, so if there's a specific variety that I can ask them to bring back over, let me know.

blojsom 2.25 available

Changelog. Upgrading instructions. Download updates. Download Quickstart. Bugs fixed.

The initial thrust of this release was the new look and feel for the administration console. The previous look and feel sucked! The new look and feel is consistent across browsers, more eye pleasing, and more extensible.

There are a number of plugins in this release to combat comment and trackback spam. If there are other methods outside of IP filtering (with whitelist and blacklist support as well as ranges), link spam detection, and spam phrase detection (with regular expression support) you think would be useful, let me know. The plugins available now are a start and they'll evolve for sure.

I also introduced two new service "integration" plugins.

* The Technorati tags plugin allows you to add Technorati tags to your post that link to other Technorati-tracked posts from around the web matching those tags. The plugin is extensible so that you can change the way the tags are output in the blog entry.

* The del.icio.us daily posting plugin finally allowed me to make use of my delicious-java library, . Eating your own dog food isn't just fun, it's del.icio.us. If you read my blog then you've noticed my del.icio.us daily links postings. I'm using the daily posting plugin to make this happen. The plugin is extensible so that you can change the way the blog entry is formatted.

If you want your weblog to get "noticed", you'll want to "ping" one of the weblog update notification services. I've been using Ping-O-Matic exclusively for quite awhile now. It sends an update "ping" to over 14 services. In the blojsom 2.25 Quickstart bundle, the default weblog notification service setting is now set to Ping-O-Matic. If you would like to use Ping-O-Matic, set your update notification services setting to http://rpc.pingomatic.com.

I'll be sending out an e-mail to the blojsom-users mailing list later on today to get the missing translations for the other supported languages. Right now blojsom supports translatations of the administration interface in English, German, French, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Swedish. I'd like to grow the number of supported translations. If you're at all interested in translating the administration interface, please let me know. It's simple and straightforward. So, the deal is ... agree to do the translation and I'll send you a blojsom t-shirt. I've got a whole bunch of new t-shirts in various sizes and they're not doing me any good sitting in a box.

Enjoy!

Stop Time

The watch that I've got on right now is stopped at 8:17. That just happened to be the time I put it on this morning before heading out the door. It's a Fossil motion dial watch (similar to the linked one) except that it's a different design and this watch switches between black and blue. Thankfully, there is enough juice in the battery that the motion dial still works.

But, at the moment it's just making my wrist look handsome.

Camaraderie and Community

5 years ago I purchased my motorcyle. The first few times I was out on the road, I didn't understand "the wave" extended to me by passing motorcyles.

The motorcycle wave is something nearly all bikers do even if they don't think about it. It is a simple to-the-side flick of the wrist imperceptible to most motorists but understood by bikers. It's like a secret handshake.

There's a part of me that wants to find a way to extend "the wave" each and every day, regardless of whether I'm riding my motorcycle or not. Common courtesies, tolerance, and understanding are free, just like the "the wave".

In time of need, the person you waved to may be the only one who stops to help you. In its simplest form, I guess it boils down to camaraderie of the saddle, and personal pride to say to the other rider: "Hey, this is a great sport and I am having fun... how about you?"

That about sums it up.

Please Help Resurrect From Russia With Buzz

Dear Internet and readers of my blog,

There are many loves in this wacky world we all live in. Some people love sandy beaches. Other people love flying kites. A few people out there love chocolate covered grasshoppers. And other people love ice cream.

I happen to love ice cream.

Specifically, I love From Russia With Buzz. Right now Ben & Jerry's is running a flavor resurrection campaign. One of the flavors up for resurrection is From Russia With Buzz. I'd love to be able to love From Russia With Buzz once again. And by love I mean I'm going to go to my local Ben & Jerry's store and purchase as much of this splendiferous ice cream as I can and eat it. I'd be happy to share some, but that can only happen if From Russia With Buzz is raised from the dead.

If you've already voted for From Russia With Buzz, thank you. But remember, you can vote for this flavor each day this month until May 31st. I've looked at the daily totals and the numbers don't seem to be moving. I could be crazy. They seem to be stagnant. Unfortunately it looks like From Russia With Buzz is in second place. I'm not sure.

All I know is, I can ... you can ... we can all do our own part to vote this flavor back into our freezers! It's so simple. It's just ... Wavy Gravy is in first, but Google for Wavy Gravy and you're getting results for Wavy Gravy the person. There's no mention of the flavor resurrection campaign. Contrast that to a Google for From Russia With Buzz. That's where the love is folks. I may just be one man, but I'm a man on a mission to get this flavor resurrected.

Thanks for listening. Thanks for voting for From Russia With Buzz.

Sincerely,

David Czarnecki

Upgrading to Tiger

Tiger ... purchased.
160GB GB backup drive ... purchased.
Entire contents of Macintosh HD ... backed that thang up.

Tiger upgrading ... proceeding ... finished at 9:06 PM.

Roughly an hour and a half for the total install.
All my music is still around.
None of my mail disappeared.
Indexing for spotlight is going to take about 15 hours ... 16 hours ... 7 hours ... awhile longer.
Programs seem a little slower, but that's probably that new operating system install lag.
New default font is more eye pleasing.

Simpy and the Simpy-Java API

Simpy

Simpy is a social bookmarking service. With Simpy, you can save, tag and search your own bookmarks and notes or browse and search other users' links and tags. You can be open and share your links with others, or keep them private.

Simpy also helps you find like-minded people, discover new and interesting sites, publish your bookmarks, detect and eliminate link-rot, etc.

A month or so ago, Otis asked me if I would write the Java API to interact with the Simpy REST API. I guess yesterday he had finished the REST API. And so today, 3 hours later, the Simpy Java API.

Download. Javadocs.

I can't say I really have long term interest in maintaining YAA (Yet Another API), but this at least bootstraps their API efforts.

Anyhoo, if you ever wanted to interact with the Simpy REST API using Java and you were looking for an API to do it, well, look no further.

And now for something completely different. Check out some Napoleon Dynamite WAVs/MP3s.

Liger clip.

Deb: "What are you drawing?"
Napoleon: "A liger."
Deb: "What's a liger?"
Napoleon: "It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed. Bred for it's skills in magic."

Enjoy!

del.icio.us Daily Posting Plugin for Blojsom

Finally ... I've used my delicious-java library to write a Blojsom plugin that will post my daily del.icio.us links to my blog automatically. I was never able to get the del.icio.us daily settings to post to my blog so I had to go the DIY-route /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif As you can see from this entry, it works like a champ.

A few things to note about the plugin.
  • It uses delicious-java 1.6 (not released yet). I'll do that later this evening. I made 2 changes in the library. One to change the method retry handling behavior in HttpClient from 3 retries to 0 retries and I added a method to the Post object to be able to break up the tags say by a space for easy looping.
  • You can configure the hour of the day in which the plugin will post any del.icio.us links to your blog. This is a per-blog setting. A thread runs once an hour and posts links to the blogs that have links and are set to post for that hour.
  • A Velocity template is used for the body of the blog entry. So, if you don't like the default one that is used by the plugin, you're free to change it. This can be overridden on a per-blog basis /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif The template is passed a list of Post objects and your del.icio.us username.
  • You can configure the title of the entry. It defaults to "del.icio.us links for {date}" where {date} is yyyy-MM-dd and gets filled in for the day on which things get posted.
It's pretty much the bomb. Well, I'm happy with it at least /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

EnFlash goes open source

EnFlash goes open source

EnFlash is an ActionScript Application Framework that I have been developing for about an year. It started as an experiment and it's main goal was to achieve a set of User Interface possibilities that haven't been done previously in Flash. I had already a nice framework created for projects like Job Designer and Alignment Tool, but I wanted something new that uses ActionScript 2, MovieClip composition and other cool techniques. The first EnFlash demo appeared in August last year and since then I continue to develop it when I have free time.

Rostislav is also responsible for 3 of the themes that ship with blojsom, the default theme, Ocean, and Vampire.

Fresh Bananas

I guess I took a liking to the Wordpress theme, "Fresh Bananas" because it was very reminiscent of Katamari Damacy. At least to me it was. So, I adapted it for use with blojsom. You can use it as a theme for your blojsom blog if you'd like. It's eye pleasing for sure.

Blojsom-Fresh-Bananas-Theme

You'll be able to download this and other themes I can't include in the blojsom distribution from the blojsom templates download section.

Simply unpack it into a "fresh-bananas" subdirectory in your "themes" directory or copy the files from the templates subdirectory into your blog's template's directory and copy the JPGs and CSS file into your blog's resources directory. Ask if you need help.

Thanks to Jeff Wheeler for designing the theme.

Enjoy!

From Russia With Buzz Resurrection Update

The interesting thing about the voting for the Ben & Jerry "Raise A Flavor From The Graveyard" campaign this month is that they're watching the voting. Any fradulent voting and they take those votes away. So please, keep it legit y'all!.

It's touch and go on a daily basis here folks. My birthday wish is that I'll be able to purchase at least a pint of "From Russia With Buzz". Ideally I'll be able to walk into my local Ben & Jerry's and purchase a tub of this good stuff. But, if I can only purchase pints, so be it.

You are allowed to vote once a day ... so please do. And please vote for "From Russia With Buzz".

Thanks for your support!

ecto rocks. As a blogging client, it's "'da bomb!" and then some. Recently, Adriaan added support for Technorati Tags. I've been using it a lot lately. I also wanted to be able to tag entries through blojsom's web interface when I'm at a computer where ecto isn't available. Hence, the Technorati Tags plugin.

If you're editing a blog entry and you're running this plugin, you automatically get an input field in which to edit the tags associated with a particular entry.

Technorati-Tags-Editing

Viewing the entry you'll see the links to the individual tags pages at Technorati.
