Not the blojsom announcement: Atom API and ecto

The blojsom announcement I mentioned in a previous post is not about the working Atom API implementation in blojsom 2.20. Tested using ecto. I guess some things changed from ecto 1.x through to ecto 2.x. Sorry about the catch-up.

The blojsom announcement I mentioned in a previous post is not about the new "Vampire" theme. This will be available in blojsom 2.20. Here are some shots of what the theme looks like in a browser.

Looking at blojsom JAR sizes

blojsom-core-2.20.jar - 98,549 bytes.

blojsom-plugins-2.20.jar - 198,622 bytes.

blojsom-addon-plugins-2.20.jar - 19,911 bytes.

It didn't really hit me until tonight that the real functionality in blojsom has been developed over the past months in the super coolio Plugin API. I guess I'd have to go back to the other versions to compare, but in reality, the core of blojsom hasn't changed much at all. I love that! I could also go into the ultra fantastic Event and Listener API, but really the plugins and extensions take advantage of that API.

blojsom offers you a well-defined way in which you can add to the functionality of the system. Right now there are a bunch of great plugins. I think there are 54 plugins for blojsom if you count the web-based administration plugins. Think about that. It's not that web-based administration was an afterthought, but it could be written in a way that didn't "disturb" the core APIs.

I won't even go into the fact that we're the only software that supports multiple presentation technologies. You can use JSP or Velocity to write templates. That functionality is available in the core. But if you tack on the 12KB add-on core bundle, you can also use FreeMarker or Groovy to write templates. And you can mix-and-match those technologies.

<beavis>Damn that's smooth.</beavis>

2 places you need to eat when in Boston, MA

Tsunami: Although the original destination was Fugakyu, the wait time there was an hour and a half, and that just wasn't going to happen. Make sure to bring your own alcohol to Tsunami. Even if you forget, there are liquor stores around the corner. Be sure to try the salmon as it's a specialty at this restaurant. The lobster roll with mango was a treat. It's a small place, but there isn't anything wrong with a little intimacy during dinner. A couple next to the table recommended the next restaurant.

Troquet: This is the theater district so don't go there looking all tawdry and shabby. Live a little. They've already paired the appetizers and entrees with wine selections on the menu. Although the waiter was schizo for the initial meet and greet, that didn't detract from the meal or the restaurant itself. The butter bucket is a great touch. Very old world. And although there was no sampling of the cheeses, they did have what looked to be a good selection of ecclectic and stinky cheeses.

No Fluff Just Stuff Boston wrap-up

No Fluff Just Stuff is a great Java conference series. There are sessions in major cities around the U.S. so chances are you can find one that's local to you. This should be attractive for employees and employers alike. Employees might have to take off a day (worst a half a day) from work, but the majority of the conference is held on the weekend. And for employers, you're probably spending $1000 total (if that) for registration and T & L expenses.

Unfortunately my printed slides for the "Java Internationalization" talk were "munged" due to font issues. ARRRRRRRRGH! Hopefully those of you who got the presentation on CD were able to view them properly. Even so, the details are there for you to start thinking up front about designing for internationalization.

Attending NFJS, you're going to hear sessions on topics that are very relevant. Yearly conferences like JavaOne can only give you those Pie-in-the-Sky presentations. I've presented at JavaOne, so I'm certainly guilty of the P-i-t-S charge. Most people I've talked to who've attended JavaOne and the like say that the real "magic" happens in the hallways when developers are talking with other developers.

Expert panel discussions are fun. Hopefully I emphasized software development a la carte. Choose the tools and processes that work for your organization, your team's skillset, and that are relevant to the problem you are trying to solve. It's common sense, but I think in 2004 you still run into situations in organizations where someone gets a bug up their ass about eXtreme Programming and suddenly it's XP this and XP that and there's no if-ands-or-buts about it. In addition to technology evaluations, you need to do process evaluations. Look for tools that can grow as your project grows.

It was also a good chance to meet people I've only connected with via the Internet. People like Erik Hatcher or Howard Lewis Ship or Ben Galbraith.

Hope to do it again.

Rolex spam

Damn y'all. Over the past few days it seems that the only spam I've gotten has been related to Rolex watches. Now, it's remotely appealing since I do have a penchant for the wrist flair, but ultimately these fools will fail. Why?
  1. I rock the Fossil. I've got over 30 of the suckers. You're simply barking up the wrong tree.
  2. I can afford to buy a Rolex. If I'm going to buy a Rolex watch, it's going to be the real deal. But, as I previously stated, the Rolex just isn't my cup of bling.
Thanks anyway.

Yours truly, David Czarnecki

Comment and Trackback moderation plugins for blojsom

The comment moderation and trackback moderation plugins (still working on the documentation) for blojsom allow you to moderate the comments and trackbacks that individuals post to your blog. In the initial versions, you can turn on comment and/or trackback moderation per blog. All you need after that is a little code in your template to only display the comments and/or trackbacks that have been been approved.

This functionality is complementary to the existing comment and trackback plugins which support throttling (i.e. the ability to limit posting every X minutes), disabling comments and/or trackbacks on individual entries altogether, and the ability to automatically disable comments and/or trackbacks after a certain number of days.

Hopefully you find this useful. That's 5 brand spanking new plugins for the next release of blojsom!

del.icio.us API in Java - Version 1.0 available

You can download the del.icio.us API in Java here. Here is my post on the delicious-java SourceForge project. For the moment, the delicious-java homepage makes available the javadocs for the API.

I figure I'll get some mileage out of this for blojsom by writing a plugin that'll allow you to interact with the del.icio.us service to manage links and other stuff. Who knows. Either way I wanted a Java API to interact with del.icio.us and now there is one.

The del.icio.us API is straightforward. Read that documentation.

Anyway, enjoy.

blojsom Bookmarklet plugin

One of the new blojsom plugins (that list is growing quite nicely I might add) that will be available in the next version of blojsom is the Bookmarklet plugin. Basically you go to the bookmarklet start page and drag the appropriate bookmarklet link to your browser bookmark toolbar. Then when you're browsing the web and you go, "I need to blog that RIGHT NOW!", you can just click on the bookmarklet and blog it. Here's how it looks.

Java Internationalization and GUI Building

Each fall, the class taking GUI Building at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute gets a Q & A session with yours truly. I'm happy to oblige as a) they use one of my books, Java Internationalization, as required reading (yeah royalties!), and b) royalties. Seriously though, I'm happy to see course instructors incorporating internationalization design as part of their lectures.

On a side note, we used an eLearning and collaboration application called Elluminate Live. Each year it seems there is a new collaboration application they're testing. This one worked well. So ... kudos folks.

blojsom 2.19 available

blojsom 2.19 is now available.

Changelog. Download. Download Quickstart bundle. Upgrading.

For those of you just joining us, blojsom is blog software. It is written in Java. It is multi-blog and mutli-user meaning you can run multiple blogs on it and have different people contributing to each blog. It has got a plugin API and over 40 plugins which means if it doesn't already do what you want it to do, you can add to the functionality quite easily. It has even got an event and listener API for you to write components that respond to events from other blojsom components. It allows you to edit your blog remotely via XML-RPC or the Atom API. It is the software behind Apple's Mac OS X Tiger Server Weblog Server. It is free.

I'd like to highlight some contributions to this release:

- Thanks to the kind folks over at Asual for the new theme. This is also the new default theme when you download and install blojsom. You can see what it looks like over on my blog. It's swell. I believe they're also going to be doing a version of that theme using red instead of blue.

- Thanks to Chris Phillipson who contributed the CPHI theme and the Date Tool, Iterator Tool, Math Tool, and Render Tool plugins.

Codename: Zygo

Core

  • Added ability to enable or disable XML-RPC on a per-blog basis.
  • Added getDateAsFormat(String format) methods to BlogComment and Trackback classes.
Extensions

  • XML-RPC handlers no longer print out password to the log.
  • MetaWeblog API handler will now check for the <categories> structure in the struct passed to newPost. If available, the handler will use the first category in the list as the category in which to post to instead of the blog ID.
Plugins

  • Updates to User Administration plugin:
    • If an error occurred in adding a blog, you would be returned to the main administration page. You are now returned to the page for adding a blog.
    • Added status message when deleting a blog.
    • Create and delete resources directory when adding or deleting a blog.
  • Added Theme Switcher plugin which allows you to select a new theme for your blog by selecting from an available list of installed themes.
  • Changed default poll time for Moblog plugin to 10 minutes from 5 minutes.
  • After deleting comments or trackbacks from an entry, you are returned to the page for editing the entry.
  • Added Date Tool plugin, a wrapper for the Velocity Date Tool where an object is added to the context so that you can work with Date and Calendar objects.
  • Added Iterator Tool plugin, a wrapper for the Velocity Iterator Tool where an object is added to the context so that you can operate more efficiently with #foreach loops.
  • Added Math Tool plugin, a wrapper for the Velocity Math Tool where an object is added to the context so that you can perform certain mathematical calculations.
  • Added Render Tool plugin, a wrapper for the Velocity Render Tool where an object is added to the context to evaluate the given strings as VTL (Velocity Template Language) using the given context.
