Search Engine Redux #4

Some commentary on searches leading people to my blog. Here goes:
  • where is my confluence home directory - It's right where you left it.
  • dirty dancing livejournal icons - Honestly folks, is the only way to jazz up your LiveJournal to add crappy movie icons? If so, I don't have 'em /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif
  • emo livejournal icons - Sorry, I only have cuban synth pop livejournal icons!
  • don't hate the player just hate the player hater - Hollah!
  • what equipment i would need to start my own peel and stick banner - You can always use duct tape, so figure on getting some of it. Beyond that, you're on your own.
  • wayne's world livejournal icons - No hu-way!
  • child flu shot photo - Keep your sick fetishes to yourself and off my blog! /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif
  • axl rose templates - WWAD? (What Would Axl Do?) - Spread the word.
  • livejournal icons dawson's creek - GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! You go to hell James van der Beek. You go to hell and you die!
  • formatting cristal report for excel - I think you meant 'Crystal'. Cristal is ... well ... obviously you don't know.
  • gwen changing in mallrats - Specific pr0n fetishes need not apply.

Sun keeps it Rollin'

Sun has gone and hired Dave Johnson to develop Roller full-time. That is big news. Congratulations.

So, does this mean a move to Cupertino? Ahhhhhhh, I remember the days of working a summer in CUP-02. Good times. Good times.

Interactive blog entries in blojsom: blojlets

What are blojlets?

From a users perspective, blojlets are interactive blog entries. Technically, blojlets are modular pieces of code that act upon blog entries. Blojlets are specific to blojsom. A specific example of a blojlet in action.

Cool.

No Fluff Just Stuff - New England Software Symposium - Sign up now!

I'll be speaking at the No Fluff Just Stuff - New England Software Symposium. My talk, "Java Internationalization" will be held on Friday, October 22nd from 1:15-2:45 PM and is billed as follows:
Internationalization is the process of writing software in such a way as to make the localization of the software to a particular region as easy as possible. In other words, internationalization aims to remove the burden of re-engineering an application when writing for multiple countries and/or regions. Localization deals with the translation of textual elements to a particular locale. There are also a number of user interface elements that may be added or removed from a locale to provide the user with a native look and feel to the application. This session will cover many of the aspects of internationalization such as locales, isolating locale-specific data, formatting of data, Unicode, input and output, GUI development, input methods, etc. The session is intended to provide an overview and introduction to the many different aspects of Java internationalization and how these fulfill the promise of "Write Once, Run Anywhere (in the world)".

If there are any areas of particular interest you'd want to see covered and you'll be at the symposium that weekend, let me know. Send an e-mail or leave a comment.

Blog Pet

What is Blog Pet?

BlogPet is a little creature for your Blogger homepage. When you install your pet it will read your blog when you update it, guess what kind of mood you're in and tell visitors what it thinks. And sometimes the pets know a few jokes too!

It's similar to a Tamigotchi, except it doesn't need food or water. The only thing your BlogPet loves is the sound of your voice! And it's really easy to install. Check it out...

This may just be the blog flair that gets the 12 and 13 year olds blogging en masse!

Asual Interactive Solutions. Another blojsom powered blog. Another nice theme.

We've tried Roller Weblogger for some time but our final choice for a blogging system is Blojsom. It ran smoothly on Tomcat 5 and only needed a little configuration to suit our needs. It's very lightweight, file based and has lots of interesting plugins that hopefully we'll have time to use one day.

More plugins to come for sure ...

A gallery plugin for blojsom sounds nice ... another user contributed one that could be used. I've also got one in the works.

A plug for GoDaddy.com domain registration

I was going to post about GoDaddy.com a day ago given Cory's awful experience with Dotster. As a domain registrar, GoDaddy is great! They're $8.95 a year and as for freebies with registration, you get the following: Free! Change of Registration • Free! Parked Page • Free! Domain Locking • Free! Status Alerts • Free! Forwarding/Masking • Free! "For Sale" Page • Free! Total DNS Control • Free! 100 Email Forwards and more. Things I especially like are the domain locking and automatic registration renewal. Honestly, I can't think of any reason I'd ever switch to another registrar.

blojsom installation under Resin

blojsom installation under Resin. It's the same easy deployment as with Tomcat or JBoss.

How's it work again? Download blojsom. Deploy blojsom. blojsom is running.

The longest part of testing this under Resin was compiling Resin, but even that was as simple as
./configure; make; make install
.

Mark Lussier Day '04

Today is Mark's birthday. You should wish him a happy birthday. He's an all-around nice guy and drops by the blojsom codebase from time to time.

If you met Mark out at Sun's JavaOne or Apple's WWDC this year, you'd have seen him with an orange hat, worn back to front. Apparently everyone (around 60 people) in Mark's office is wearing an orange hat that reads, "Mark Lussier Day Aug '04", which is printed on the back.

Holla!

Server-specific guides (Tomcat and JBoss) for installing blojsom

I started putting together application server-specific guides for installing blojsom. Here are the guides for installing blojsom under Tomcat and JBoss. They're almost identical. Installing blojsom is that easy.

You can also use the blojsom Quickstart bundle. Download blojsom. Deploy blojsom. blojsom is running. It's that simple!

I just downloaded JBoss 3.2.5 and deployed the blojsom Quickstart bundle. It took me longer to download JBoss than it did to have blojsom running! /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

blojsom and MetricsReloaded

One of the available plugins for IntelliJ is MetricsReloaded.
MetricsReloaded is a plugin to IntelliJ IDEA which calculates and displays a large number of source code metrics for any IDEA project. MetricsReloaded is designed for use in project tracking, quality assurance, and developer training. Over 210 metrics are currently available at the project, module, package, class, and method levels. Metrics can be sorted, graphed, compared with previous metrics runs, and exported to file. MetricsReloaded is available via the Plugin Manager.

I ran the plugin on the blojsom codebase. Some statistics:

Total lines of code (comments included, whitespace excluded): 25169
Source lines of code (comments and whitespace excluded): 13744
Comment ratio (lines of comment code to total lines of code): 45.42%
Javadoc coverage (class level): 100%
Javadoc coverage (method level): 99.88%

I'm pleased. There's a helluva lot of power (dispatchers, extensions, plugins to name a few) in those 13744 lines of code. And in case you don't know what they do, there's 11425 lines of code that help to explain it all /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

Update 4:40 PM: Javadoc coverage (method level): 100%

Unicode Normalization in Java

Given recent discussions on the atom-syntax mailing list regarding normalization, I figured it'd be useful to point other Java folks (again) at IBM's International Components for Unicode for Java. In particular, the Normalizer. So, if you needed to do something like normalize using NFKC (Compatability decomposition followed by canonical composition), you could use the following method:
static String normalize(String src, Normalizer.Mode mode)
with the mode of
Normalizer.Mode.NFKC
Doesn't seem that terrible.

One strike and you're out!

Unfortunately, if you allow public signup for something like your blog or wiki or whatever, invariably you're going to get the random punter who thinks it's funny to post some off-color comment or jibberish Word document.

Although I suspect Elvis Presley could've added something to the blojsom documentation, as of this morning, Elvis has quote-unquote, left the building.
