blojsom/OS X Tiger Server Day 3

Any word from Apple? I've got screenshots and I've got a basic idea of interesting things they're doing with authentication and weblog creation, editing, and maintenance. The screenshots are sexy. You know screenshots are good when you try and click on them, forgetting they're screenshots.

They're working with legal to understand how to submit changes, enhancements, fixes, and such back to the project. This is exciting. Again, I'm glad they're willing to give back what they can to the project.

Turns out they did demo the Weblog server during the WWDC server update session. Anyone catch this?

How have the downloads been? Check the SourceForge statistics page. 144 downloads Monday and 168 downloads on Tuesday. Keep 'em coming!

Any plans for a blojsom meetup? I'm game. NYC would be a logical choice since that's the closest big city. I'm hoping to be out on the West Coast towards September/October. Maybe sooner. Thoughts?

That's about all for now.

blojsom/OS X Tiger Server Day 2

What do your parents think? They know I have a blog. They're excited. They wanted to understand what blogging is and what the Apple announcement means. Next time I'm visiting I'll be installing a feed reader. If any one of them asks to start a blog ... well, I just don't know what I'll do. "David, your father wants to talk to you about the moblog plugin."

blojsom 2.17? We're looking at adding a bunch of new plugins. First on the list is an internal "aggregator" plugin so that you can develop a site which lists recent posts from the configured blogs on the server. "Sticky posts" could simply be posts to the default blog. It's quite simple.

What's been the response so far? All positive. Thank you. I'll put together a list of posts talking about Tiger Server. I'm responding to each e-mail. I woke up at 4 AM today thinking it could all not be true and that these posts were just silly. I wish I could've been out there at JavaOne or WWDC to meet other bloggers.

I'm thinking back two or three weeks ago when VH1's Best Week Ever had a segment on who was having the best week ever. It was "some dudes" ... "some dudes are having the best week ever!" Mark and I are some dudes /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif That's maybe the long and short of it.

Random thought? If this doesn't make SourceForge Project of the Month, I don't know what will!

Tonight's drink of choice? Hendrick's Gin martini.

Hendrick's Gin is made with hints of Coriander, Juniper, Citrus Peel, Rose Petals, and an infusion of Cucumber. This palette of flavors imparts a suprisingly balanced, delectable complexity. The taste is clean and refreshing, yet unusually rich for a gin.

It is. There's also a bit of Cristal left.

Some more on the blojsom and OS X Tiger Server announcement

Did Apple contact me before the announcement? Yes. However, Apple's policy is not to discuss the details of future products. So, I didn't actually know they were going to include a Weblog server based on blojsom until today. I also had an obligation to uphold confidentiality in discussions with Apple.

Are we committed to supporting blojsom? Yes.

Has blojsom been slashdotted? Yes. Mac OS X "Tiger" Server previewed. We're handling the load just fine /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif Thanks to the folks over at Atlassian for providing us and other open source projects with a free license for Confluence.

Will Apple contribute back to blojsom? That's what we've been told. I'm sure there are fixes, plugins, and other enhancements that will benefit the entire community.

Are you sippin' Cristal? Of course /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif I must say, this is the finest champagne.

Apple's Tiger Server to bundle blojsom

Apple Previews Mac OS X Server 'Tiger'

The Weblog Server that will ship in the next release of OS X Server is based on blojsom.

Weblog Server is fully compatible with Safari RSS in Mac OS X Tiger and makes publishing a weblog as simple as checking a box in Server Admin preferences. Weblog Server is based on the popular open source project 'Blojsom' and is fully integrated into Tiger Server with an easy-to-use interface, Kerberos authentication support and LDAP integration. Weblog Server provides users with calendar-based navigation and customizable themes and users can post entries using the built in Web-based functionality or with weblog clients that support XML-RPC or the Atom API.

I'm still in shock /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

A Java-based weblog client that can post to XML-RPC blogs?

Chroncile Lite. Good stuff. I haven't used it in awhile since I can just post through the web interface, e-mail, or IM my blog. But hey, when I did use it, it was good. And hey, they've got a server plugin for blojsom. So, that gives me a good happy feeling /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

Well, permalinks are better ...

Old. New. Any old links should work. I'm not converting any prior posts which reference the old style. That'd be silly. I haven't touched the feed links. Tomorrow or the next day. Now it's time for bed.

Supported formats are YYYY/MM/DD/permalink, YYYY/MM/DD, YYYY/MM, and YYYY.

The permalink filter and associated template code to be available in the next release of blojsom.

blojsom 2.16 available

Changelog. Upgrading. Download.

Notable updates in this release:
  • Linear post navigation as described hm'yah.
  • Plugins that automatically add themselves to the administration console so that you can edit their settings. The moblog plugin and the macro expansion plugins are the two plugins right now that add themselves to the console. That means I can do fun stuff like add or remove authorized moblog e-mail addresses or change accepted MIME types for attachments or change the moblog mailbox information. It means I can add and remove macros like the one for http://blojsom.sf.net or http://sandler.sf.net.
  • Fixed propagation of user information to the extensions, Atom API, Comment API, and XML-RPC.
  • Improved memory usage as the extensions no longer retain information in memory or keep the XML-RPC handlers in memory.
  • Added the "Days Since Posted" plugin. File that in the seemingly useless yet oddly compelling department.

Blogging via Instant Messenger with XML-RPC

So, Mark and I have yet another project in the works. I can't go into any detail about it at the moment, but one aspect is IM integration.

Your blog software must support the Blogger API. It must implement the following Blogger API methods: getUserInfo, getUsersBlogs, newPost, deletePost. These are the commands that the service supports.

  • login {username} {password}
  • logout
  • seturl {XML-RPC for your blog}
  • setblogid {blog ID to which entries will be posted
  • getuserinfo
  • getusersblogs
  • newpost
  • endpost {true|false} (if true, the post is made, otherwise it is discarded)
  • deletepost {post ID}
So, how would an interaction look like with the service after adding the service to your buddy list?
  • login {username} {password}
  • seturl {XML-RPC for your blog}
  • setblogid {blog ID to which entries will be posted
  • newpost
  • {You are now editing your post. Keep sending messages to the service. When you are finished with the post, then you send the following command.}
  • endpost true
  • deletepost {post ID}
  • logout
The AIM library is currently stripping out HTML. This will change if I change the AIM library. For some reason, it looks like international characters are not received correctly. I'll have to look into this in more detail.

I guess if you really wanted to test this out, I can point you at the buddy to add to your list. You'll have to send me an e-mail directly (david (here is where you'd put an @ symbol) blojsom (dot) com). I'm not after anyone's blog usernames and passwords. If you don't trust me then don't send me an e-mail asking me to point you at the buddy.

This was my 2nd post via IM to this blog. I deleted the first when I tested the deletepost functionality /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Update: After talking with the author of the AIM library, looks like the stripping of HTML also rips out international characters. So, I'll have to noodle more on a better way to handle this, but stripping of HTML can/should/must be done in the state when you're not editing a post. Otherwise, if you are editing a post, it simply takes content between Tag X and Tag Y. That should be fun since different IM clients can each send different markup around the message. So Tag X and Tag Y might be different depending on the IM client. At least I've got some options.

Another post via instant messenger

Well, hopefully this will have a correct title. Although, that remains to be seen after I finish typing the rest of the post. The best part about this new way to post to your blog is that it's interactive. So, once you start a post, you're in the editing post state until you end the post. After which, it'll be posted to your blog. Like now...

Notifying the blogosphere with Ping-o-Matic

In blojsom, you can set any number of "weblogs.com compatible XML-RPC ping" notification services in your blog properties to receive a ping when you add or update blog entries. Now you can just use Ping-o-Matic which will ping 12 notification services for you. Just set the URL in the notification service settings to, http://rpc.pingomatic.com/.

As I wrote to the overlords of Ping-o-Matic:

Oh great and noble Ping-O-Matic overlords:

You might want to just bump up this post (http://pingomatic.com/blog/archives/2004/05/20/metapinging/) onto the About page. Took me a minute to find that URL. In the pr0n sense, "that's the money shot". /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif Otherwise, thanks for the service, it's now my one and only.

On being Atkins un-friendly

This exchange actually happened to Dan and I this afternoon.
We do our thing, and return to the elevator for the return trip. We just catch the lift as the doors are closing, and join the woman already inside.

We then have the following exchange:

Woman: "Ahhhg! Hijacked." She has pressed the button to go up one floor.

We politely smile in apology, anyway. A moment later:

Woman: "Ahhhg! A CARB PERSON!" (pointing at David's bag of pretzels.)

We chuckle politely. Then:

Woman: "Ahhhg! A SUGAR PERSON! Even worse!" (pointing at my Twizzlers.)

If you're on the Atkins diet ... fine. However, I really don't care for joking or pointed comments labeling me as a "carb person". The "Atkins-friendly" mentality, if you want to call it that, should extend beyond just what you're eating on your plate.
