blojsom is now listed on the blog software breakdown chart. For some more details on the breakdown, please read my original post.

The Google Blog is boring

Is this thing on? was the first entry posted to the official Google Blog.
Anyway, I'm excited the blog's up. We're going to post stuff here - regular bloggy things: What Larry had for breakfast. What Sergey thinks of that Hellboy movie. Which Dawson's Creek character reminds us most of Eric.
It's been anything but regular bloggy stuff. Boring! Come on ... how long does it take to type "Larry had Rice Krispies for breakfast this morning. He was out of Honeycombs."

blojsom 2.15 available

Changelog. Download. Bugs fixed.

Now that the quicklinks are out of the way, some explanation and highlights.

  • Live preview and quicktags within the administration console when adding or editing entries. The live preview is great. You know what your entry will look like when it is posted. The quicktags insert common markup elements. It's also smart enough so that when you've opened a tag, it changes the button to the closing tag. The tags available are strong, emphasis, delete, underline, link (for creating hyperlinks, img for creating image references, ul for creating lists, li for creating list items, blockquote, pre, more, and dictionary lookup. Quite handy! You could customize this to add more elements if you want.
  • The moblog plugin now correctly handles 1) HTML e-mails, 2) sending entries into individual categories, and 3) the ability to use a "secret word" when sending moblog entries so that unauthorized messages are not written.
  • Added the Import tool plugin which allows you to include content from other URLs in your templates. I'm using this for my link blog, "Cinnamon Babka".
  • Added the Word count plugin which counts words in your entries. This is useful if say you want to provide excerpt RSS feeds.
  • You can customize the e-mail sent to the blog owner for comments and trackbacks on a per-user basis. We still need to provide editing of the comment or trackback template per-user from the administration console, but the functionality is there.
  • Sandler and Textile4J updates.
Enjoy!

Sandler 0.7 and Textile4J 1.20 released

Sandler is a Java toolkit for creating and consuming Atom.
Textile4J is a java implementation on Textism's Textile humane text generator.

If I had cinnamon babka'd these [ANN]'s from Mark, I could've had quippy little things to say, but they deserve a bonafide blog entry. Now I can finally get blojsom 2.15 out the door as well. So, Sandler 0.7 and Textile4J 1.20 are now available.

Thanks to all the folks who contributed to the releases.

Link blog is active

Blogs are much like the babka (in the episode of Seinfeld where they're all headed to a baby shower and Jerry and Elaine stop off to pickup a chocolate babka) ... each one is different. You might consider your main blog your chocolate babka and your link blog your cinnamon babka, but as Jerry said, "Cinnamon babka a lesser babka? I don't think so!"

Anyhoo, long story short ... I added a new blog, my link blog. In my main blog template, I use the new Import Tool plugin so that I can suck in the content from the link blog to my main blog. Quite simple. You can use this plugin regardless of whether or not you're using Velocity for your templates.

Patchouli oil, fatty veggie burritos, hemp bracelet vendors no more ... Phish is breaking up

Citizens of Vermont will soon be looking for jobs.

An announcement from Trey, lead singer of Phish.

Last Friday night, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I've been having that Phish has run its course and that we should end it now while it's still on a high note. Once we started talking, it quickly became apparent that the other guys' feelings, while not all the same as mine, were similar in many ways -- most importantly, that we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost twenty-one years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude.

So Coventry will be the final Phish show. We are proud and thrilled that it will be in our home state of Vermont. We're also excited for the June and August shows, our last tour together. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was our last attempt to revitalize ourselves. We're done. It's been an amazing and incredible journey. We thank you all for the love and support that you've shown us.

Phish is good. I've seen them many many times in concert. That sucks. /images/emoticons/mozilla_frown.gif

Do not assume that acronyms apply for all locales

As we wrote in Java Internationalization, do not assume that acronyms apply for all locales.
"In other cases, the acronym might be different when it is translated for a given locale. For example, the English acronym NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is known as OTAN (l'Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord) in French and NAVO (Noord Atlantische Verdrags Organisatie) in Dutch."

Also be aware of abbreviations. i18n, the abbreviation for internationalization is i19g (Internationalisierung) in German!

Why isn't fruit on the bottom yogurt pre-mixed?

OK, aside from the obvious, "Well, then it wouldn't be fruit on the bottom!", I'm wondering this afternoon about why all yogurt isn't pre-mixed? Is it that yogurt that is pre-mixed will spoil quicker than non-mixed yogurt? Is it that it would require changes to the yogurt manufacturing process that would be cost prohibitive? There are manufacturers who have pre-mixed yogurt, but I haven't done a cost comparison. I guess I'm also wondering, who doesn't mix their yogurt if they buy the fruit on the bottom yogurt?

Comment and Trackback plugins now customizable through Velocity templates

The comment and trackback plugins in blojsom had a hardcoded format for the comment and trackback e-mail that gets sent to the blog owner if e-mailing of comments/trackbacks is enabled. I changed the plugins to use a Velocity template for the message body of the comment or trackback e-mail.

Oh, and you can customize the comment and template e-mail per user!

More protection for the blojsom moblog plugin: secret word

You can use a secret word to protect e-mail to blog entries with the moblog plugin using the "moblog-secret-word" property. If the subject of the moblog e-mail does not begin with this secret word, it will be skipped. This might work well if you have a common name moblog e-mail address like joe@somehost.com. This functionality also works with the capability to send entries into individual categories. For example:

Subject: (some-secret-word)[/category_name] Subject of the e-mail used as title of the entry

This will be in blojsom 2.15. Almost done...

The joys of comment throttling

If you don't already know, blojsom supports comment throttling. As such, a comment can only be left every 5 minutes from a given IP address. Just one of the many ways in which you can handle comments in blojsom. There's also IP banning, automatic disabling of comments after a certain # of days, disabling comments on individual entries, disabling comments altogether. Anyhoo... Here's an actual IM conversation from this morning:
dan (10:47:02 AM): Also, it's not actually taking any comments
dan (10:47:07 AM): they're not posting
me (10:47:54 AM): yeah they are
me (10:47:56 AM): i got your comment
dan (10:48:07 AM): yeah, k, ONE of them
dan (10:48:10 AM): I posted like 12
me (10:48:16 AM): HAHAHA!
dan (10:48:19 AM): Trying to figure out why only 1 appeared
me (10:48:24 AM): that's because of comment throttling
dan (10:48:30 AM): hahahahahahahahahaha
dan (10:48:30 AM): nice
Oh yeah, and I'm e-mailing this entry and I can disable comments that way too!

Have you checked the blojsom wiki today?

The blojsom wiki. Powered by Confluence.

All the information you need is there (or it will be there soon). There are screenshots and I've tried to include applicable screen captures throughout the documentation where applicable. The screen captures are used when describing the administration interface. Aside from installation instructions, I've started a series of "How do I ..." pages that describe how to configure different settings in blojsom like changing which plugins execute for your configured flavors or how to give your categories more descriptive names or what plugins are available for blojsom?

Enjoy!

Insight from Alton Brown

As I blogged earlier, Alton Brown was here at the office today and part of that day he devoted to Q&A. So, some insight from the man himself:
  • What makes a good cook vs. a good chef? Cook understands the process and the steps. A good cook can execute on dinner without having to follow the steps from a book or a recipe. A great chef is artistic. They understand the complexities of combining flavors, isolating aspects of food, etc.
  • Ideal microwave would have 3 buttons: 30 seconds, coffee, and popcorn.
  • An angel food cake pan usually has the center tube higher than the edges of the pan so you can turn it upside down to hang and cool so its not pressing on itself.
  • Basic misconception people have with cooking is that they need more "stuff" to cook with as opposed to knowledge about cooking.
  • Cutting board size should be 2-3" on each side when laying the knife diagonally.
  • In the kitchen, everything is a part of the system ... everything relates to one another.
All in all, great session. I'll post my picture with Alton later on tonight.

Traveling ... light posting expected

Don't expect much over the next few days. Traveling. It's a shame too as I've got the beta for Pulp Fiction that I can't install until I get home. So you want to use Groovy in your blog software?

You can with blojsom. How?
  • Our Groovy plugin allows you to write plugins for blojsom using Groovy. Quite useful for rapid prototyping of blojsom plugins or simply to make your plugins dynamic so that you can tweak them without having to restart your server.
  • Don't want to use JSP, Velocity, or FreeMarker (all supported in blojsom) for writing your templates? Write templates using Groovy (handled by the Groovy dispatcher). It utilizes the Simple Template Engine.

The blojsom wiki ... stop by and say hello

Folks, just FYI (if you haven't been I(d) already) that the blojsom wiki is now the main source for documentation for blojsom. Any links to pages at http://blojsom.sf.net will still work, but not for long. The one piece of documentation that'll live at the SourceForge site will be the javadocs.

The installation instructions are now wikified. I posted a bunch of screenshots last night. Our plugins rock. Now that I can edit the changelog live and in real-time, we're back to codenames for releases. Many of the 1.x releases had codenames as well, but in the Forrest documentation migration, they were lost. FYI, most if not all of them are names of alcohols, 'specially the vodkas. You could say Mark and I have a "sweet tooth" for the fire water.

Next up on the documentation front are the "How do I ..." pages, which will be mini-tutorials on how to fully take advantage of all the good features in blojsom.

Just to get you thinking about one of the new features in blojsom 2.15, have a look at the changelog.

You can send entries to individual categories using the moblog plugin. Simply use a subject like:

Subject: [/category_name] Subject of the e-mail used as title of the entry

A bullet from the following blog entry from Tim Bray resonated in a good way this morning.
Developers in the Java ecosystem should have access to feeds and publishing services that's as easy to use as ordinary files.
Hmmmmmmm ... A Java-based publishing service that has support for Atom syndication feeds and editing via the Atom API that's as easy to use as ordinary files? It's called blojsom. Even though I'm moblogging this entry, I could have just as easily typed it in as a text file or entered it through the web interface /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

RE: Wired article on Mo' Better Blogging With Newton

From "Mo' Better Blogging with Newton" ...
Manzano e-mails his posts to his TypePad account, a hosting service run by Six Apart, publisher of the popular Movable Type blogging tool. The TypePad service does a lot of the magic; it's set up to accept blog entries by e-mail, making it very easy to maintain a blog from just about any e-mail-capable device.
One of the capabilities of the current release of blojsom is the ability to moblog entries using the moblog plugin. As I said before, in the next version, the moblog plugin has been enhanced to allow you to moblog entries into any category on your blog ... just as I'm doing with this entry.
An upcoming TypePad feature should make it easy: Manzano said TypePad is promising the ability to simultaneously post images and text. "I'm just waiting for it," Manzano said.
You can already post images and text with blojsom's moblog plugin!

In years past, I've been a bit lazy about getting my bike (shown hm'yah) out on the road. This year a tire leak prompted me to do the "official" servicing of the bike. So, it's off for a brand new tire, inspection, and tune up. I remember its first service after the initial break-in period. It was like driving a totally different bike. Search Engine Redux #2

Some commentary on searches leading people to my blog. Here goes ...
  • "I'm Rick James Bitch" - OK folks ... I love Dave Chappelle too, but the only thing we share in common is the same first name ... that and personality. And personality goes a long way. But, if you want the sound clip from Chappelle show, click here.
  • Actually, there are a lot of Dave Chappelle searches leading to my blog. But seriously folks, do you really need "Rick James bitch buddy icons"? Wow ... just wow.
  • "Axl jumped into the crowd" - Apparently the GnR Blogger template I blogged about is gone ... GONE I TELL YOU! Then again, maybe that's for the best as GnR is gone. Their memory will live on in "Best of..." collections that will net the artists little in royalties. Looks like the other members might've found a sound with Scott Wieland on vocals. I hear Axl is still searching for another brickwaller who wears masks and fast food buckets to complete his Chinese Democracy. Axl, please stop ... you're only going to hurt future generations of brickwallers.

You can now route moblog entries to categories using blojsom's Moblog plugin

In blojsom 2.15 (or, what's in CVS currently), you'll be able to route moblog entries into categories. In case you were wondering, this entry was e-mailed to the blojsom category. Neat, eh? Now every category is mobloggable. God I hate myself for just having used mobloggable.
