blojsim ... blogging via instant messenger (IM)

I remember this morning that the "Best In Show" post from Sam Ruby mentioned, "The killer app for both P2P and Social Software is the same in both cases: IM." I started doing the math at that point:

1. blojsom is essentially social software.
2. blojsim has been around almost as long blojsom. It's an add-on that allows you to blog to blojsom via Jabber or AIM.
3. Mark isn't busy enough at work so why not throw this out there again, and see if people start some RFEs for it /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

1. + 2. + 3. = this blog entry. blojsim, you know you want to /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Re: RSS formatting and specs

Blogs are great. Where else are you going to intelligently debate things like RSS formatting and specs?

"puppies and butterflies and kittens and cute stuff" aside, saying that we were RSS 0.91 compliant would've been wrong. So, I feel I was being technically honest in changing our RSS version to 0.92. However, I still don't see that RDF is much better in this regard for the following reason: for its various elements, a maximum length is given, but it's only a suggested maximum length. Unless I'm reading the specification wrong, which I don't believe I am, it's still only (Suggested) .

Big pimping on b-l-o-j

Well, it looks like the PR machines are at work.

First Mark beats me to the punch with the announcement of blojsom 1.8. And I'm fine with that because Mark is my partner in crime. Then, the javasurfer.org announcement of blojsom 1.8 this AM was amusing because I found that via javablogs. Then there was the little bit of happy over at freshmeat.net announcing blojsom 1.8. Beyond that, the comp.lang.java.announce posting of blojsom 1.8's availability.

In summary, blojsom 1.8 is available.

RSS Compliance Bug ... Suggestion or Required?

Executive summary: Yes, for RSS 0.91, the length limit is required. There are no string-length or XML-level limits in RSS 0.92 and greater.

Reading through the post on the RSS "bug" in MiniBlog and PersonalBlog got me curious as blojsom supports various RSS flavors.

Reading through the UserLand RSS information it says that "There are no string-length or XML-level limits in RSS 0.92 and greater." Guess I'll have to change our supported RSS version from 0.91 to 0.92. "RSS 0.92 is upward-compatible with RSS 0.91. Every new feature of 0.92 is optional, meaning that a 0.91 file is also a valid 0.92 file."

blojsom and semantic blogging

Steve Cayzer over at HP Labs in the UK is going to be using blojsom to support their semantic blogging program. He's made their Semantic Blogging Demonstrator public as of today and will be rolling out capability on that blog as its developed. Right now you can view metadata for the blog in a number of formats, N3, RDFXML, and Brownsauce.

This news is something I've been wanting to blog about for a few weeks now but couldn't until Steve had something public. I can only say that this will present some unbelievably interesting opportunities for the blog community.

Congratulations to Steve and his team!

Writing your own forum in blojsom, or rather BlojsomForum

Well, Dan calls it BlojsomForum and it is his prototype of how you could write an online forum, ala what you might see from Jive Forums using blojsom.

Presenting "Blogs: An Evolution in Human 'Interaction'" at HumaniTech

So, it looks like my presentation was accepted at HumaniTech. This should be a lot of fun.
As part of the University at Albany's "Humanitech Semester," we seek papers that explore the cultural and theoretical issues that arise between the Humanities and Technology. How do the Humanities/Technology transform, supplement, or challenge each other? What forms of subjectivity or cultural practices emerge from their intersection? What theoretical or practical implications arise in areas that are affected by the intertwining of technology with social and cultural space?
It's game on baby!

UPDATE: The HumaniTech Conference Schedule is now online and it looks like I'm up at 10 AM. Looking at some of the other presentation topics, all I can say is "Wow ... just wow!"

blojsom 1.8 nearing completion

Well, this beotch keeps dropping little hints as to what's to come in blojsom 1.8 so I better give a quick rundown of what we're finishing up. It's also been like 11.82 days since our last release so we have to get a a new one out there /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif
  • Support for the Comment API
  • Adding support for more of the Blogger API
  • BlojsomFetcher: This is a good thing™. Adding support for this represented a lot of changes throughout the API, none of which you'll really notice except for the fact that there is now a more clean separation and abstraction of where blojsom will "fetch" its entries from. The interfaces and classes in the core API were also improved because of this new interface.

So, what is the BlojsomFetcher interface? Well, I guess I wasn't really joking (even though I was at the time) when I said blojsom would be backed by a database in blojsom 1.8 and abandon the filesystem. The truth of the matter is that with the BlojsomFetcher interface, blojsom could be backed by a database, even though by default, it will not.

Simply put, this interface abstracts where blojsom will retrieve its entries and categories. blojsom will by default ship with an implementation which retrieves categories and entries from the filesystem. You can imagine some scenarios like one in which someone writes a CachingFetcher that caches a set of entries for a particular request (making blojsom even faster than it is today) or a DatabaseFetcher which retrieves categories and entries from a database.

    /images/emoticons/mozilla_tongueout.gif

If Mark has time while he is waiting for jury duty tomorrow, he might get RESTLog support done /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif, but that will probably be available in blojsom 1.9. Expect the "drop" of blojsom 1.8 this Friday!

Client Perceived Response Time (CPRT)?

*sigh*

http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/cprt

CPRT is a technique for accurately measuring the response time of a Web service as perceived by clients. This resulting information about response time can be supplied to any agent on the Internet, including the service provider. CPRT data can be used to determine whether performance expectations are being met and whether additional resources (such as a more powerful server or a faster network connection) are needed. It can also be used to determine whether the service provider is abiding by a pre-defined service level agreement.

blojsom and w.bloggar

Marcelo, developer of w.bloggar sent me an e-mail this AM asking if I wanted to add blojsom to the list of supported tools. It shouldn't be a problem to provide him with the correct information for the .INI file he'd need to modify. Funny thing is, all my work is under OSX at home. I've given up Windows completely 'cept for Windows at work and that's under VMWare and strictly for the use of Outlook. Any other work is under UNIX. So, I tried w.bloggar out under Windows to see if it could talk to my blog. Lo and behold, it worked. blojsom 1.7 available or "You are in a maze of weblogs, all alike. Think blojsom, and get out!"

Run, don't walk to your nearest SourceForge download page for blojsom and pickup the latest version. Of interest in this release:
  • Changed the BlojsomPlugin.process() method to also accept the HttpServletResponse to allow for plugins to manipulate things like cookies
  • Referer plugin has been re-written to allow tracking and totaling by flavor, as well as only showing today's referer's. And we know how much fun that can be given the recent FBI referer scandal /images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif
  • New Calendar plugin that renders a visual calendar into your blog, hyperlinking dates that have entries
  • Calendar navigation code has moved to the new Calendar Filter plugin. If you want to continue to have calendar url navigation on your blog, please be sure to add this plugin to the start of one of your flavor-based plugin chains
  • Added the Send Email plugin that allows other plugins to send email messages
  • Comment and Trackback plugin will now e-mail comments and trackbacks (if enabled) to the blog owner
I'm not going to give the whole changelog, you can check it out yourself.

Mark has added a second theme called "SecondWave". I'm hoping to get the "Green Lantern" style sheet from Andres.

Oh, and if you want to talk flexibility, you might want to check out Chris' weblog over at Sixlegs. Chris wrote a FreeMarker dispatcher, some accompanying templates, and a FreeMarker Calendar plugin. So, that means you really have some flexibility in terms of your presentation. JSP, Velocity, and now FreeMarker. /images/emoticons/mozilla_wink.gif

blojsom gets a little help from FreeMaker

Chris made his FreeMarker-powered blojsom blog available today.

It's great when someone is able to customize your software to adapt it to their liking. It's also a first as until now, we've only had the JSP dispatcher and Velocity dispatcher. But, Chris wanted to use FreeMarker and so wrote himself a FreeMarker dispatcher. I hope that it was as easy as I made it out to sound on the homepage:

"Have another display technology you'd like to use? Simply extend the GenericDispatcher interface and configure the mapping file so that blojsom knows how to map the template extension to the proper dispatcher. That's it!"
/images/emoticons/mozilla_laughing.gif

Note to self: I need to allow for sizing on the Emoticons plugin because my grin was much bigger than above when I got Chris' message this afternoon.

blojsom 1.8 to abandon the filesystem and use a database

Well, blojsom 1.7 development is nearly finished. Mark and I are testing and documenting all of our many changes to blojsom.

But, I got to thinking that the filesystem really is limited in how expressive we can be with blojsom and its components. So, for blojsom 1.8 I'm going to rearchitect the system to go against a database. I'm certainly open to ideas on the persistence engine since I had looked at Hibernate awhile back, then went to Castor JDO, and then this Prevalayer came out. So much to do, so little time.
